Sacred space and how to create it
Last updated date: 04/28/2025
Do you have a special place where you can center yourself and have a moment of reflection? A place that allows you to catch your breath and reconnect with the things that are most meaningful to you?
Everyone can benefit from creating places and habits that are intentional, inspiring, and full of heart. It’s a reliable way to recover energy, breath, and awareness.
What is sacred space?
Sacred space is where you connect to the things that are most meaningful to you. It’s a place that reflects your beliefs, ideas, dreams, and creativity.
Inspirational quote
“Your sacred space is where you can find yourself again and again.”
— Joseph Campbell
Create your space
As you’re creating sacred space, consider how you want it to make you feel and how you want to use it. You can generate sacred space daily, monthly, or seasonally. You can share it with loved ones or practice alone.
3 steps for creating sacred space
Follow these three easy steps to create your sacred space:
- Find your place. Sacred space is a reminder to take a breath, reconnect, or simply smile. It can be a:
- corner of a room
- bookshelf
- top of a dresser
- place in your garden
- public space to share with others
- private space filled with your own personal touches
- moveable (on wheels or a tray)
- Gather what you love. Put meaningful items in this space — anything that energizes or inspires you, such as:
- Pictures of people you love or admire
- Favorite candle, poem, affirmation cards, crystals
- Plants or flowers
- Create a beneficial habit. Once you create your sacred space, decide how you’ll enjoy it. You can:
- Use the space to meditate, stretch, pray, or set intentions.
- Just sit with your eyes closed, enjoying a few minutes of peace and quiet.
- Sing, chant, beat a drum, or play an instrument.
You can continually refresh the area with what you feel is valuable in the moment.
Your ritual can be simple or complex. You can share with friends or family members, or spend that time alone. Whatever you choose, make sure it’s nourishing and meaningful to you.
Benefits of sound
Sound can ease the mind and increase a feeling of harmony in the body. Healing sounds produce vibrations that can actually alter your brain waves, converting feelings of guilt and fear to love and joy. Use crystal bowls, tuning forks, drums, rattles, and chimes to create healing vibrations. This is a powerful way to reinforce an intention or affirmation. Use your unique voice to pray, chant, or repeat an intention to produce powerful nourishing habits.
Benefits of light
Light is a symbol of illumination. Light candles, create a sacred fire, or burn herbs to encourage personal illumination. Use the power of light in your sacred space to spark feelings of peace, connection, and inspiration.
