Easy ways to reduce food waste
Last updated date: 10/25/2024
You don’t need to start a compost in your backyard to reduce food waste. There are simple things you can do every day to stop throwing away old food (and save money and protect the environment in the process).
Plan your meals
Before you go to the grocery store, plan what you want to eat the following week, write it down, and put it on your fridge. Then, prepare your list for the store (check what items you already have before you go).
Eat the most perishable foods first
Create a space in your fridge for foods that will go bad in a few days (think salads, fresh fruits, leftovers, etc.). Plan your meals around eating those foods first, or freeze them before they spoil.
Respect the two hour rule
Food poisoning is no joke. Remember to refrigerate leftovers within two hours to reduce your risk.
Share with your neighbor
Made too much food and don’t feel like eating leftovers? Share it! See if a neighbor, friend, or even someone at your local homeless shelter would like a free, home-cooked meal.
Take a doggy bag
When you’re out at a restaurant, ask for smaller portions or request a take-away box to bring your leftovers home with you.
Remember: Small changes can make a big impact when it comes to reducing your food waste. That means more money in your wallet and less stress on our environment.
